Position of the Course

This advanced course helps students practise the skills of spoken and written communication as required for the academic study of the English language or for any thorough study of an academic subject in general.

Contents

Reading and writing skills differentiated according to the demands of particular genres, oral presentation skills and negotiation skills in group discussions in an academic environment (or in front of a bigger audience) pronunciation of RP (Received Pronunciation) linked to phonological transcription. Expanding the passive vocabulary through independent work.

Starting Competences

To have successfully completed the course English language proficiency I or to have acquired the necessary skills by other means.

Final Competences

  • To have an active and passive command of the Englisch vocabulary on an advanced level.
  • To have a practical insight into the phonological structure of RP (Received Pronunciation).
  • To be able to transcribe isolated words in RP phonologically.
  • To be able to interpret phonological transcriptions.
  • To have a pronunciation close to the RP-pronunciation.
  • To have productive writing skills in English on an academic level.
  • To have productive speaking skills in English on an academic level.
