Master of Conflict and Development

The Master of Conflict and Development is an advanced Master’s degree, on offer for those students who are interested in the special relationship between conflict and development and who want to prepare themselves for a professional career in international cooperation. The degree should enable those students to analyse in a scientific manner the concrete problems surrounding conflict and development and to participate in the elaboration of practical solutions.

The programme (taught in Dutch) consists, in the first place, of a number of theoretical and scientific courses that will present an insight into the issue of global development, the structure and dynamic of contemporary internal conflicts in the periphery and the instruments for conflict prevention, conflict resolution and post-conflict reconstruction, with sustainable development as end goal. Besides acquiring the necessary theoretical insights and a capacity for critical analysing, special attention is given to professional methods and skills for which seminars and practical exercises are organised.
The students can accentuate (through the choice of elective courses) their study in the analysis of political conflicts or in the analysis of the issue of development. Finally, a Master's Thesis must reflect the students’ academic and practical skills and insights.

Duration of study : 1 year full-time (or 2 years part-time). Part-time students choose in the first year the three general courses, and two courses from list 4.
Three courses from list 4 and the Master Dissertation are taken during the second year.
