Position of the Course

To acquire an understanding of the physical aspects of optical communication. To get to know the main components and understand their operation. To be able to take into account the component properties in the derivation of the system performance.

Contents

  • Optical communication systems: basic types and parameters: generic optical link, transport networks (WDM and TDM), access networks, local networks, optical interconnect
  • Basic components for opt. com. systems: fibres, light sources, detectors and receivers, optical amplifiers
  • Transport networks: advanced concepts and components
  • Access networks: advanced concepts and components
  • Local networks: advanced concepts and components
  • Optical interconnect: advanced concepts and components

Starting Competences

Final Competences

Understanding of system concepts and most important components for optical communication links. Skills: - signal-to-noise and power budget calculations in optical networks - practical skills in handling optical fibers - measurement skills with respect to components for optical fiber links - using CAD tools for optical communication links
